X series / XR series – analog line output & optical digital output
The analog line output (next to Zone 2 output) is a fixed volume stereo output – audio from the analog, digital, and HDMI inputs can be routed to this analog output. Audio from the HDMI and optical/coaxial digital inputs will be downmixed to two channel analog audio.
The optical digital output is also a fixed volume output and audio from the analog, digital, and HDMI inputs can be routed to this digital output. Please note that the digital output is outputting a bitstream signal – it is not downmixing. For example, Dolby Digital surround encoded audio signals will not be downmixed to two channel PCM audio, the device downstream of the digital output would need to have a DAC capable of decoding bitstream audio signals.
Being that these are fixed volume outputs, the receiver or processors volume control will not affect the output level of these outputs. Whatever device you connect these outputs to would need to have a volume control. For example, another preamplifier, wireless headphones transmitter, headphone amp or a DAC, etc.
