To add a powered subwoofer or a secondary subwoofer amp with your AudioControl Director amplifier, you can use the amp's Digital outputs to send signal to the subwoofer.
Digital A & B outputs
On an M4800, M4840, M6400, and M6800, the Digital A & B outputs have all the same controls as any of the amplified output zones. You can change volume and matrix inputs, and set EQs, crossovers, and speaker profiles. You can group the digital outputs with the amplifier outputs to make sure that the main speakers and the subwoofer always have the same input and volume status.
Grouping Amplified outputs with a Digital output
Your group will have at least 2 zones: One zone for the mid and high-frequency speakers, and a second zone for the subwoofer. Assign the amplified zone and the digital output the same group number, and engage the GRP Lock for each zone.
In this examples, our living room speakers will output from Zone 8, and the subwoofer will output through the Digital A output. Both outputs have been assigned to Group 1.
Next, set the crossover for your zones. The amplified zone should have a high-pass crossover and the subwoofer should have a low-pass crossover. If your subwoofer has a built-in crossover, leave the crossover in the web interface set to default. Finally, change the digital output from Stereo to Mono.
Now, the mid & high frequency stereo speakers are outputting from one zone, and the low end signal is outputting from the Digital output to your subwoofer. Because they're grouped, they will always share the same input, power status, and volume level.
Not all powered subs or subwoofer amplifiers have a digital input. If that's the case for your install, you will need a dedicated Digital-to-Analog converter between the Director's digital output and the input on your subwoofer.
